The role of necromancy in the plot and gameplay of Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era

In the new devlog for the turn-based strategy Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era, the developers spoke in detail about necromancy, its gaming aspect and its impact on the game world. Historically, this gameplay element has always been central to the series, but the balance and philosophy of necromancy has varied from part to part. In the new game, the creators decided not only to return it in the usual format, but also to expand the mechanics, enrich the lore and take into the lessons of the past.

In Olden Era, the necromancy system will be more strategic. Players will only be able to resurrect creatures that are already in their army, preventing the army from spawning entirely from the undead. In this case, the number of resurrected units will depend on the health of enemies killed in battle. This limitation eliminates the possibility of increasing the army too quickly at the expense of weak creatures, making the balance more stable. However, the team promises to monitor the gameplay and make changes if necessary.

The developers also raised the topic of developing necromancy through different skill levels. More experienced necromancers will have access to unique spells and will be able to resurrect elite units such as death knights and vampires. Additionally, the possibility of customizing the undead army is being discussed to highlight strategic depth.

The team also shed light on the history of necromancy. Necromancers are presented as a complex and heterogeneous group. On Antagarich they rule the kingdom of Deya, and on Jadama they operate through a network of local branches. Previously, their magic was closely related to alchemy and required sacrifices, but modern necromancers are gradually switching to using earth energy.

The internal conflict in the Necromancers Guild deserves special mention. The young vampire Galtran, whose ambitions and radical experiments raise fears among the older , attempts to reimagine necromancy in a modern context. This line promises to be revealed in the story campaign.

Necromancers maintain complex relationships with religious organizations and magical circles. The gods of light and goodness, as the developers note, have always opposed necromancy, and its adherents have been under pressure from the Inquisition for centuries. However, signs of cooperation are appearing in new lands – local residents sometimes turn to necromancers for help in protecting themselves from demonic threats.

Necromancy in Olden Era promises to be not just a mechanic, but an important element that reveals the depth of the world. Players will be able to take a fresh look at this ancient and controversial aspect of the Heroes of Might & Magic universe.
